In my opinion having a vertical grip is essential to own. You do not have to twist your arms to get a portrait which can become uncomfortable and a bit rediculous looking. The best part of a battery grip is the battery life is doubly increased when you're using two batteries and because the 50D hasn't got a great battery life with the included BP511 the battery grip is essential for an all-day outing.
